The Carver-Scott County Master Gardener Community Garden began construction in 2023, and is opening in 2024.

The mission of this community garden space is to help reduce food insecurity issues, and to promote healthy people, healthy communities and a healthy planet. Master Gardeners are committed to helping people understand the benefits of food being grown locally and encouraging at home food sustainability.

  1. Applications for garden plots will be accepted beginning February 1, with priority given to Scott County residents. Each applicant is limited to one plot per person. Plots will be assigned after the March 15 deadline. If more applications are received than plots are available, it will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Additional applications will be placed on a waiting list.
  2. After the assignment of plots is completed, any open plots after March 15, will be open to any person regardless of residing County.  Additionally at this time, persons who have already reserved a plot, may reserve an additional available plot.
  3. Garden beds available:
    4’ x 12’ raised bed (3 available) = $20
    4’ x 8’ raised bed (6 available) = $15
    Security Deposit = $20
    4’ x 2’ stand-up accessible bed (2 available) = $10

Scott County Community Garden Program Details

Reservation of garden plots, located at 7151 190 th St W, Jordan (Scott County Fairgrounds) require:

  • A completed Garden Plot Registration and Release Form(Waiver),
  • An annual fee,
  • A refundable security deposit, and
  • A commitment to gardening for the entire season.

Plot Registration and Assignment:

  1. Applications for garden plots will be accepted beginning February 1, with priority given to Scott
    County residents. Each applicant is limited to one plot per person. Plots will be assigned after
    the March 15 deadline. If more applications are received than plots are available, it will be
    allocated on a first come first serve basis. Additional applications will be placed on a waiting list.
  2. After the assignment of plots is completed, any open plots after March 15, will be open to any
    person regardless of residing County. Additionally at this time, persons who have already
    reserved a plot, may reserve an additional available plot.
  3. All required fees and the signed agreements are required to confirm reservation of a plot. No
    work may begin until the reservation has been confirmed.
  4. After April 1, no refund of fees for cancelled reservations will be issued.
  5. Subleasing of garden plots is prohibited.
  6. The Community Gardens will generally be available April 15 through October 15. Garden plots
    will open as soon as they are ready for the season. You will receive email notification when plots
    have opened for the season. Garden plots will be closed for the season on October 15.
  7. Garden plots should be cared for at least once a week. If staff is notified of a plot that is not in
    compliance, the gardener will receive a notice, and will have seven (7) days to act to remedy the
    issue. If a gardener fails to act, the plot will be revoked.
  8. Gardeners are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of their garden plot. Watering,
    weeding, harvesting, and any other garden-related maintenance are all the responsibility of the
    gardener.
  9. Water from the available irrigation system can only be applied while the gardener remains at
    the plot (do not leave the garden area with the water running).
  10. The use of herbicides (commercial weed, insect, or fungal killers) on garden plots is prohibited.
  11. Gardeners are asked to be aware of the height of accessories or plants to ensure they do not
    shade into the neighboring plots.
  12. Items not allowed in the gardens include: illegal, poisonous or noxious plants, marijuana, plants
    that will spread into neighboring plots, bee hives, tires, and hazardous materials.
  13. Gardeners may only harvest items from their own plots.
  14. At the end of the growing season, gardeners are responsible for clearing their plot of all plant
    materials and leaving the plot as they found it in the spring. Security deposits will not be
    refunded if the plot is not cleared by October 15.
  15. The U of M Extension Master Gardeners do not assume any responsibility or reimburse for theft,
    acts of vandalism, weather conditions, or any other factors that may affect the gardens.
