Want to Create a School Garden at Your School?

Creating a Garden “At a Glance”

Step 1: The master gardener sets up a meeting with the School and its personnel. The idea of this meeting is to take the school though the process of setting up their garden. At this first meeting the master gardener answers all of your questions so you understand this is a process you follow to make your garden a success. The master gardener gives you a book on Square Foot Gardening. This book  answers most of your questions on how to set up the garden.

You are also given all the information they need to apply for garden grants though the Ship Program and other Grants.

Step 2: The master gardner sets up a meeting in 2 or 3 weeks to check on your progress and answer any questions you may have.
We’ll go over

  • What plants work best for your site
  • Where the vegetables should be planted
  • How to make a map of the garden that can be easily followed
  • Where to get your soil, plants, wood etc for their garden bed
  • Which businesses in your area donate items to their school.

Step 3: The final step and third meeting is what to do on planting day

  • How to schedule the students classes so the day flows smoothly.
  • Go over the learning stations with the planting group
  • Locating the best places for teacher and parent volunteers on planting (we want to maximize our help)
  • Make sure everything is ready when the classes start coming out
  • Make sure all the stations are manned and ready
